take the quiz!

Take the quiz:
Are you and your dog ready to become a registered therapy team?

If you are considering becoming a registered Therapy Team with your animal, here is some information for your consideration. Before you can begin the process, you and your animal must have good foundational obedience skills including a reliable “sit”, “down”, “stay”, “come when called” and “leave it”. Your animal should be able to walk at your side with a loose leash. Most importantly, you and your animal must have a great relationship!

Precise obedience skills are not required, however you must have control of your animal at all times while visiting. You need to be observant; work together as a team; anticipate your animal’s responses, behavior and positions; and be able to redirect your animal as needed. If you feel you need more training, it is highly recommended that both you and your animal enroll in a positive-reinforcement/force free dog obedience course or therapy team preparatory course.

Take The Quiz!

Your dog

1.    Is your dog people-oriented, sociable, friendly and confident?

2.    Will your dog initiate contact, stay engaged, make eye contact, and allow their behaviors to be redirected?

3.    Is your dog well-mannered; i.e., doesn’t jump up on people?

4.    Is your dog able to disregard food or toys on cue, e.g., with a “leave it” command?

5.    Is your dog comfortable being petted, at times awkwardly?

You

1.    Are you a considerate and caring leader?

2.    Do you have a relationship with your dog that reflects a loving partnership?

3.    Are you able to be a proactive advocate for your dog?

4.    Do you know how to enhance your dog’s abilities to be his or her best with the people they are visiting?

5.    Do you know what your dog’s signs of stress are and can you reassure your dog with cues, or commands as needed to help them be successful?
